If you are stuck in the cycle of applying for job after job with no avail, it might be time to change your job search approach. In this very competitive job market, it’s more important than ever to find ways to separate yourself from other candidates and stand out to hiring managers. Here are some tips to separate yourself and get those interview requests.
1. Find your Differentiating Factor
Just like with brands, you need to have your own differentiating qualities that will set you apart from others. Look beyond your standard job skills and dig further into your distinctive strengths. Do you have a unique perspective, a specific personality trait, a hobby or industry experience that is relevant? Find a few things that set you apart and weave them throughout your resume and interview answers.
2. Tailor your Resume
Customizing your resume is SO important. Read the job description thoroughly and notice what keywords the job ad uses to describe the company, responsibilities, etc. Make sure you use the same language or jargon on your resume and application. Don’t lie about having a skill they require. But if you have it, make sure you use the same terms.
This is also important for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). These are often the systems you will submit your resume into when applying for a position. They have algorithms and AI components that will search your resume and gauge fit. Using the same language as the company will increase your chances of being found by these systems for both current and future opportunities.
3. Follow-Up
After you apply for a job, send a brief follow-up email or LinkedIn message to the talent acquisition team or hiring manager (you can usually find them on LinkedIn). BRIEFLY, introduce yourself and state that you have applied and are interested in the position. If there is room, include 1-2 lines of why you are a fit for the position. You may not get an answer, but it also may encourage them to give your resume a second look!
4. Do Your Homework
When you do get that call back for an interview, it’s time to put your research hat on and study up! Not only should you familiarize yourself with the job description and basic company information, but dig even further. Search for news articles, press releases, and even podcasts that company members have been featured on.
If you can naturally reference these topics in an interview, it will show that you are genuinely interested and knowledgeable about the company. Will this take time and effort, yes. Will it be worth it if you can land your dream job, we think so!
5. Network
Engage with your target company’s social media, attend industry events, and make connections! You can also develop skills by attending a class, webinar, or conference. These experiences will not only educate you further, but you never know who you’ll meet that may lead to something great!
