Project Engineer, Packaging: Food Manufacturing
Major food and beverage client needs Project Engineer in Packaging. The position plans, directs, and executes Engineering activities associated with product packaging technologies, materials, equipment, and systems. Leads and supports line design activities, equipment installations, plant expansions, and equipment/line/system operation/maintenance/upgrades by working with contractors, vendors and other associates. Manages multiple projects controlling scope, schedule and budget. Provides food processing & packaging technology guidance and expertise to all departments. Stays current on all essential operations of our industry, including fruit juice processing, batching, pasteurizers, CIP systems, compressors, heat exchangers, cooling towers, filters, chillers, fillers, cappers, cooling tunnels, labelers, sealers, rinsers, palletizers, conveyors, case coders, PLCs, AC drives, instruments and other related equipment & systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform the duties of an Packaging Systems Functional Engineer, taking full responsibility for providing technical expertise in packaging materials, technologies, equipment, and systems including analysis, design, specifications, equipment selection, estimating, training, commissioning, troubleshooting, upgrades, support, and regulatory compliance.
- Perform the duties of a Packaging Project Manager taking full responsibility for developing & executing multiple projects including justification, approval, procurement, scheduling, construction, coordination, cost control, documentation, training, safety, and start up.
- Ensure all designs and construction activities comply with all applicable company requirements and local, state, and federal regulations.
- Develop block flow diagrams, equipment layout drawings, and construction packages; manage construction and control schedules & cost within project timeline and budget; and provide clear and concise analysis and reporting.
- Generate AutoCAD layout drawings, dimensioned plans/elevations/isometrics/details, coordinate with electrical designers on panel drawings and electrical schematics, detail system components and equipment interconnections.
- Generate operation & maintenance training documents and standard operating procedures/manuals as required to ensure successful project start up and operation. Be directly involved with commissioning, start up, and training.
- Identify opportunities to improve plant performance, product quality and employee welfare, provide leadership in developing and implementing practical solutions, and participate in long-range capital planning.
- Provide technical support for the operation, maintenance and improvement of production lines and equipment. Support the plant maintenance departments as required for trouble shooting specific problems and applications involving materials, equipment and production lines.
- Maintain complete documentation of all packaging materials, equipment, rates, and capabilities.
- Work in a matrixed team environment, accepting varying roles to support company objectives, initiatives and policies.
- Responsibilities may also include unexpected job duties as required by business needs. You will be required to perform other related duties as assigned.
Education, Experience & Skill Set Required:
- BS Engineering, preferably Mechanical
- Must have at least 5 years experience in Packaging Engineering, with 3 years experience in food product bottling and packaging desired.
- Must have the ability to analyze, interpret and create production line reliability and constraint data, mechanical blueprints, block flow diagrams, equipment layouts, and dimensioned plan, elevation, isometric, and detail drawings; as well as to coordinate with electrical designers on panel drawings and electrical schematics, detail system components and equipment interconnections.
- Must be able to travel domestically 50% of the time, including occasional weekends
- High degree of accuracy required and confidentiality is a must.
- A high level of Microsoft Office software skills is required
- AutoCAD & MS Project skills highly desired
Language Skills:
- Ability to read and comprehend English instructions, correspondence and memos.
- Must have strong communication skills and be comfortable interacting with all levels of corporate management, plant management, and hourly associates.
Mathematical Skills:
Must have the ability to work with mathematical concepts involved with fractions, percentages and ratios. Must be familiar with MS Excel spreadsheets for statistical analysis, graphing requirements, and project dollar tracking. Routinely works with size, rate, and ratio calculations as well as torques, pressures, strengths, and Metric to English conversions.
Compensation:
Salary range is $75,000 to $87,000 commensurate with education and experience.
